4.8 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Parts of Punjab

On December 5th 2024, Lahore and nearby areas felt a 4.8 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake struck several cities of Punjab. Despite the magnitude, there were no casualties or significant damage caused.

4.8 Magnitude Earthquake

The Punjab Earthquake stuck several cities including Nankana Sahib, Jehlum, Kharian and Sarai Alamgir. It is reported by the Pakistan Meteorological Department that the epicenter of the earthquake is Kharian with a depth of 15 kilometers. As the residents felt the tremors, it caused a wave of panic among them as people evacuated the buidings. However, there was no damage to property or the residents. The emergency teams remained on alert although the earthquake caused no major disruptions.

Although the magnitude was moderate, the 15 km depth elevated its impact making it widely felt across the province. Seismic activity is common in the region because of the movement of tectonic plates. It is advised that the residents stay vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks. Frequent earthquakes remind us of the preparedness of the areas, structural resilience and also community preparedness!
