Remembering Bibek Pangeni, a Nepali PhD student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Georgia (UGA), who is no more after a courageous battle against a brain tumor. He succumbed to the deadly disease on 19th December 2024.
Pangeni started his PHD journey at UGA in 2022, demonstrating significant dedication to his studies. In early 2023, he was diagnosed with stage three glioma while he was in Nepal mourning for his mother’s death.
Upon returning to the United States, Pangeni underwent surgery at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital, where surgeons removed a portion of the tumor for further analysis. While undergoing his treatment, Bibek showed remarkable courage, bravery and resilience. He was supported by his wife and Nepalese community throughout.
It can be stated that Bibek’s journey was marked by unwavering determination and courage. From his commitment to academic pursuits, to his determination to counter a life-threatening illness, inspired peers and faculty alike. The Nepalese Student Association at UGA, along with the broader university community, rallied to support him, reflecting the profound impact he had on those around him.
His passing is a significant loss to both the academic and Nepalese communities at UGA. Bibek’s death shocks the fans who looked forward to his cancer battle. His legacy of perseverance and dedication to science will continue to inspire future scholars. As the community mourns his loss, they also celebrate the indomitable spirit he displayed throughout his battle with cancer.
