After an eight-year hiatus, Fawad Khan’s Bollywood comeback launched with the romantic comedy Abir Gulaal, co-starring Vaani Kapoor. Aarti S. Bagdi directs the film, and Indian Stories along with A Richer Lens Entertainment produce it. The team began shooting the film in London in late September 2024 and plans to release it on May 9, 2025.
Fawad Khan’s Bollywood Comeback
Khan’s previous Bollywood appearances include notable roles in Khoobsurat (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). However, following the 2016 Uri attack, the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association imposed a ban on Pakistani artists working in India. It led to his departure from the Indian film industry .
Despite the Bombay High Court dismissing a petition in 2023 that sought a complete ban on collaborations with Pakistani artists. It stated that it was a “retrograde step in promoting cultural harmony, unity, and peace.” Fawad Khan’s return has reignited political tensions. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has opposed the release of Abir Gulaal in Maharashtra. It is primarily because of the presence of a Pakistani actor. MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar stated, “Under no circumstances will we permit such films to be released in the state” .
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam also expressed reservations, suggesting that Pakistani artists have not achieved widespread success in India. It called for a clear government policy on their participation in Indian cinema .
Fawad Khan, aware of the sensitivities surrounding cross-border collaborations, has expressed a cautious approach. In an interview, he stated, “Only time and situation will tell” regarding his return to Bollywood, acknowledging the complexities involved .
Abir Gulaal explores the journey of two individuals who unintentionally help each other heal, with love blossoming as an unexpected consequence. The film’s music is composed by Amit Trivedi, with lyrics by Kumaar .
As the film’s release approaches, audiences and political entities will soon reveal their response to Fawad Khan’s return, highlighting the ongoing challenges of cultural exchange amid geopolitical tensions.
