Bringing together the best chefs in Lahore for bakery and deli items, The Rumor Mill serves as an umbrella under which several different vendors are providing their delicious goods. It consists of Latteria Mozzarella serving pastas and pizza, Insomnia Kitchen which provides their mouthwatering crepes, La Reve and A Piece of Cake that supply desserts and Salad Cauldron.

Shahryar Ali Zaidi opened Insomnia Kitchen in 2010 to satiate the hunger pangs of the nocturnal Lahori public, delivering food to your doorstep into the wee hours of the morning. Their promise of expanding materialized into The Rumor Mill. Mahnoor Zaidi of Insomnia Kitchen talks about the essence of this idea. “We wanted Lahore to experience a unique multibrand food boutique. The Rumor Mill can be whatever you need it to be – a place for lunch, a quick bite, an evening tea or a casual juice!”

The variety of food caters to all. Lucky for me, I’m not a picky eater, so I got to try a bunch of different items from throughout. The Florentine Crepe was the first to catch my eye. It has a strong base, which showed promise, but the spinach inside lacked zest and flavour. It could have been a lot better had the filling been more consistent. However, this is the only place where you’ll actually find bananas on the inside of the Nutella crepe. The best part? They were absolutely fresh, along with the lightly crispy crepe in which the nutella was spread evenly.

For a refreshing drink to beat the summer heat, The Pina Colada is a burst of fresh air. It starts with a base of pina colada and works its way into a guava juice. The combination is subtle and the summery straw adds a nice touch.

Latteria Mozzarella has made an impact with their take on Italian cuisine. Their chicken calzone filled with olives, corn, mushrooms under a bed of mozzarella is spicy and addictive, something you don’t want to put down. However, the cheese pepperoni pizza is one dish that I really enjoying writing about! It gets its strength from a crispy base and a crispier crust, one that is perfect to wipe your plate clean with. The cheese is strong but not overwhelming, while pepperoni chunks spread out generously from every corner of the oregano infused slices. Each bite was worth the calories!

La Reve, based on the left side of the café, is where customers can choose from an array of desserts, and has a special place in my heart because of my sweet tooth. I recommend the Espresso macaron – crunchy on the outside but melts in your mouth with the first bite! If that’s not your thing, their latest creation – A Choco brownie on a cone – will surely be the perfect end to your meal. A creative, distinctive dessert that looks amazing and tastes even better! It was definitely a heavy end to my meal, but the rich chocolaty goodness was just what I was looking for.

The Rumor Mill is an exciting concept, one that is new to Lahore and its growing foodies.  Located in Mall 28, the café will hopefully continue to surprise us with more authentic food in their comfortable spot, and is definitely a spot everyone should go visit!
