What it’s about: Julie Powell is stuck in a dead-end desk job until she finally makes it big as blogger, cooking her way through Julia Child’s classic cookbook. Plus, it’s a heart-warming glimpse into how Julia Child got her start in the culinary world.

Why you need to watch it: Stuck in a rut? Desperately looking for a break? This true story is definitely going to inspire you to take more risks and pursue your passions. And, of course, Meryl Streep as Julia Child! From the look to the voice and that infectious laugh — it’s amazing.

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Matthew Rhys and Daniel Brühl

What it’s about: Top chef, Adam Jones (Cooper) has partied way too hard for way too long, completely destroying his career. He finally decides to clean up his act by moving to London, opening a restaurant to rival his long-time nemesis’, and finally, taking a shot at a legendary third Michelin-star.

Why you need to watch it: A sneak-peek into the dark underbelly of the restaurant industry where sex, drugs, and epic meltdowns roll hard and fast. Also, keep an eye out for Sienna Miller doling out some tough love like a boss, Matthew Rhys’s explosive anger and arrogance, and, obviously, Bradley Cooper’s baby blues! P.S. Food direction by Mario freakin’ Batali!

Starring: Helen Mirren, Om Puri and Manish Dayal

What it’s about: Facing persecution, the Kadam family close down their restaurant in India and seek asylum in Europe. Ultimately, they find themselves in the French countryside, opening up shop right opposite a Michelin-starred eatery.

Why you need to watch it: The struggles and frustrations of the individual characters are guaranteed to pull at your heart-strings, but it’s the charming, old-world, opposites-attract chemistry between a very haughty Helen Mirren and an endearingly fussy Om Puri that’ll really have you welling up.

Starring: Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp

What it’s about: While opening up a small chocolate shop in a quaint French village, a woman and her daughter are vilified by the town’s Mayor for softening the rigid traditions and swaying the moral compass of his community.

Why you need to watch it: An insanely talented woman makes incredibly sensual chocolates, puts an uptight angry dude in his place, AND woos a pre-abuse-allegations Johnny Depp, all at the same time? OH YEAH! Plus, she’s best friends with Dame Judi Dench who plays the kind of slightly eccentric, loose-mouthed grandmother we all wish we had.

Simply Irresistible (1999)

What it’s about: Amanda Shelton has just inherited her late mother’s restaurant, but the only problem is… She’s a terrible cook. Chaos ensues until she finds a magical crab (Yes… you read that right) who turns her into an overnight culinary sensation with a wave of its claw.

Why you need to watch it: This movie is an ode to how ridiculously ridiculous rom-coms of late 90’s were, complete with a hunky love interest who can’t decide whether he likes her or likes her not. And Buffy plays a chef…with a magic crab. WIN!

Why you need to watch it: The story delicately approaches the very human mistakes so many men and women make when they find themselves stuck in a bad marriage — lonely, angry, desperate — without a way out. All in all, a beautiful illustration of the hurdles we face and conquer to fulfill the uniquely human longing to be loved and understood. And, really, who doesn’t want to see the super slick Mumbai lunchbox delivery service in action?

Chef (2014)

chef

Starring: Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and John Leguizamo

What it’s about: When a hot and happening chef loses his job after a bad reaction to a negative food review, he tries to regain his lost glory by starting up a food truck and traveling across the country with his best friend and estranged son.

Why you need to watch it: Jon Favreau’s epic meltdown is legendary, Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious playing an egomaniacal, smooth-talking venture capitalist, and the father-son relationship that buds while riding around the country in a food truck is one big AWWWW. Plus, when a shot of simple grilled cheese sandwich can make your mouth water, you know your inner foodie will love every second of it.
