WE HEADED OVER TO ONE OF LAHORE’S ALL-TIME FAVOURITE RESTAURANTS TO SAMPLE THEIR NEW MENU, AND LOVED EACH BITE!

With the growing number of new restaurants, fast Food chains, cafés, bistros, bakeries and more, you can say that when it comes to Food, us Lahori’s are totally spoiled for choice (which is always a good thing!). But most of the time, going back to a familiar place where you know the meal and experience will never let you down is exactly what you’re in the mood for. And what better place to do that then good ol’ Fuji?

I headed over to Fujiyama last weekend to try out their new menu that I’ve been reading about on the Pakistan Food Forum and hearing raving reviews of from many my friends. The thing about Fuji is that as soon as you walk in, your mood is lifted. Most groups of friends and families that frequent the place can recount tons of happy memories there, and it’s always nice to have the familiar staff greet you and seat you on your table. I always like to sit by the pool and see the late-night swimmers!

For starters, we ordered the spicy nana wings and tempura prawns. The wings were tangy with a kick of spice, just the way I remember, and the tempura was fried to a perfect crisp. I was craving some good sushi, and several items from their revamped menu stood out, such as the venison crunchy maki! To share on the table, we went with several sushi and sashimi choices, all executed beautifully and tasted authentic. You can always count on Fujiyama to get their California, Crunchy Maki and Spicy Tuna Rolls done to perfection! We also ordered the Yellow Fin tuna sushi, which was deliciously light and fresh, the lobster tempura, and the angus tataki – thinly sliced (grilled to rare) Angus marinated in garlic sauce.

Next up was the star dish of the night: The Grilled Black Cod Steak, which can only be summed up as simply heavenly. The sauce was divine – the right mix of sweet and tangy, and the fish was tender and prepared just like at any top restaurant abroad. I give their black cod a huge thumbs up and is something I would recommend to anyone who is a fish-lover. They also have a spicy cod and a Teriyaki cod, which sounded incredible!

A friend ordered the Wagyu Beef Steak – a dish that is not for the faint hearted! A hearty portion of mouthwatering steak, cooked to exactly the right temperature and style, and served with fresh veggies, is exactly the kind of well thought out meal you can expect from such an institutional kitchen. At a price tag of Rs. 14,000/-, the steak will fill you up, but leave your wallet feeling light!

As we gorged on the delicious fried banana and vanilla ice-cream, we bookmarked a few items to try for next time: the Venison Shogayaki (sliced venison flavoured with ginger and soy sauce) and different variations of the teppenyaki: black cod, angus, wagyu, venison and salmon, venison and prawn and red snapper. The Yokohama set menu looked quite appetizing too, consisting of one skewer yakitori, a salad, a soup, wagyu teppenyaki with stir-fried vegetables, steamed or garlic rice and a dessert. Quite a good deal for Rs. 15,500/-!

Fuji is one of the few places in Lahore that one can eat at over and over again and have a fantastic meal each time. See you there!
