ANUSHA BAWANY GOES ON A GIRLY DATE TO KARACHI’S HOTTEST NEW EATERY.

Karachi’s ever-growing food scene has recently added on to its list of successes with the recent opening of Café MEWS. With a promise of a wholesome, honest and unforgettable food experience, the Café has already become one of the hottest joints in town, as it is getting harder and harder to get a reservation. I was unable to make it to the opening, where friends and foodies from all over the city gathered to try out their tasting menu, and from hearing the rave reviews, from day 1 I had felt like I had missed out. So, clearing my schedule and making my reservation in advance, I headed over for a dinner date with a friend to experience it for myself.

Neeshay Rabbani, one of the owners, was there to greet us, along with her friendly and welcoming staff, and seated us on the outside patio under a blanket of lights. The ambiance has been inspired by European cobbled street corners and takes its architectural inspiration from the prestigious Mews Streets in London. With intimate seating and mood lighting, I was immediately transported out of Karachi and into a posh café hidden away in some exclusive alley, which is the exact feel the café is looking to achieve.

Everything on the menu looked enticing, and I was torn between ordering dinner items and snacking on the much raved about Red Velvet Pancakes and Nutella French Toast (is there ever a wrong time for pancakes?). We started by ordering the Tuscan Flatbread Pizza with chicken to share, truffle fries, and at only 300 calories, the Super Food Quinoa Salad as a healthy option. The flatbread pizza was the perfect size, and tasted authentic with a perfect crisp, and will surly be giving Xanders a run for its money. The truffle fries were sinfully addictive, with a hint of truffle oil and bright orange Sriracha poured on top. Delish! And as predicted, we had to order more! The Quinoa salad was a great surprise; fresh and light with a perfect balance of flavor, and loaded with black quinoa, cherry tomatoes and spinach, it is a dream come true for anyone who is looking for both a delicious and healthy option.

When it came to the mains, I was torn. I wanted a little bit of everything, and had heard some great things about the Wings and Ribs Platter, Mac & Cheese and the No Fuss Burger. But finally, I went with the Dirty Bolognese while my friend went with the Korean Beef Bowl, and both of us were extremely content with our choices, The Bolognese hit the spot, wholesome and hearty the way true comfort food should be, while the Korean Beef Bowl lived up to the hype created around it. A glutinous portion of rice topped with Korean fried beef strips and a shiny yellow centered fried egg – an authentic oriental dish, made to perfection.

Since there were only two of us, there was only so much we could eat in one go – but so far, we had exceeded our limits. But that doesn’t mean we had to stop there! As I say, there is always room for dessert. We decided to share the triple chocolate skillet cookie – and let me tell you, it was worth every calorie filled bite! Sinfully delicious and an overdose of chocolate, this is for the true chocolate lovers in town, and the true definition of death by chocolate.

MEWS is the brainchild of three very passionate individuals, the talented Neeshay Rabbani along with foodie couple Zainab and Amir Tariq. Each partner brings to the table their own love for food and understanding of flavor palettes that culminated in a diverse menu with a little something for everyone. Neeshay is meticulous and obsessive about quality and nutrition, and sees that each dish is constructed and served with the finest ingredients. You can thank her for the healthy menu options! Zainab is all about the comfort food, and brings to the menu those hearty meals that remind you of your grandmothers cooking. Amir is the entrepreneurial spirit behind the scenes, making him the operational guru and apparently the mastermind behind the prime Rib platter (which is definitely on my list for next time!) Not only do these three have a solid foundation, but the support and guidance of fellow foodies. Samar Hussain, a familiar and respected name in the food industry, is a Mews Food Consultant and has been working on the menu for almost a year, drawing inspiration from her European travels and conceptualizing dishes that speak to the heart. And lets not forget that every restaurant needs a killer dessert menu (in my eyes) to really make it, and we can all thank Humera Iqbal for her sweet tooth. The brilliant mind behind A Whisk Come True, Humera is a dessert queen and lends her talents to the MEWS menu.

All in all, MEWS has an expert team of dedicated minds working behind the scenes, and it all goes to show. From the clearly thought out menu to the detailed execution of each dish, MEWS has truly kicked things off on a high note. After just one visit, I am already hooked, and can’t wait to try everything that I couldn’t fit into one sitting.
