How did you decide your daughters name? What does it mean?
You can say our daughter’s name, Leila Noor, was fated. Before we were married Shehriar and I had independently decided to name our future daughters Leila. Imagine our surprise when during the course of a conversation we realized we both wanted the name Leila – and spelled this way too! When we found out we were having a baby girl, we both knew instinctively that the name was meant to be. Leila Noor means “light in the night” and it is such an apt name for the little person who has transformed and brightened our lives.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Nap when the baby does – the mantra of every mom and the best advice EVER!

Any tips for losing the baby weight?
The best strategy is not gaining too much weight to begin with. It’s a myth that one has to eat for two. In order to lose the pregnancy weight one should eat healthy and exercise regularly. It’s important to be gentle to oneself and set realistic expectations for weight loss. It took your body nine months to gain the weight so allow yourself at least that much time to return to your former, fabulous self.

What was the best part about being pregnant?
A lush head of hair, an absence of body hair, and glowing, gorgeous skin. During my babymoon in Paris and Barcelona, the baby bump allowed me to bypass lines, score reservations at booked out restaurants and generally be treated like a princess.

How do you get ‘me’ time?
As a nursing mum to a two-month-old, it’s pretty difficult to get a significant chunk of ‘me’ time right now. I try and squeeze in micro moments whenever possible. I’ve also learned to relish small pleasures like a long, hot bath or alone time with my husband – things I completely took for granted before.

How did you decide your daughters name? What does it mean?
I came across the name Eden as a lesser known Muslim name. My husband and I both wanted a very unique and different name. If I am to be honest Leia is straight out of Star Wars as my husband Sattar is a Master Jedi! But contrary to what people think, I chose it as a middle name not him. Eden means paradise, delight and Jannat. It’s pronounced beautifully in Arabic ‘Eh-dhen.’ Leia has several meanings: God’s gift, child of heaven, and lily.

What was one great piece of advice you got about being a new mom and from who?
From my mother. She said “love love love your baby, take care of her well and have a ton of fun with her. Don’t worry about the rest.”

Who does the baby most look like?
She’s a small carbon replica of her baba with just a little bit of mama sprinkled on top.

What was something you were originally nervous about but now feels really natural?
I was nervous about literally everything until she was born but felt like a pro after she was placed in my arms. From that point, I knew nobody could take care of her like I could and it all just kicked in. My husband has been a star and has been our rock right from the start of my pregnancy and he’s an extremely hands-on dad.

How has motherhood changed you?
I’m the same in every way but I feel like I’ve developed  another dimension to my already existing self. I’m aware everyday that I’m responsible for this little life entrusted to me.

How do you get ‘me’ time?
Good help and her grannies!

Tips for losing the baby weight?
Run and starve!

How are you doing up your nursery?
I went for off-white walls with white paneling and there’s a large tree of life mural with white doves and flowers. I didn’t want anything too girly or babyish. Her toys and things make the nursery look cute without being over the top cutesy.

What was the best part about being pregnant?
The baby and nothing else. I wasn’t one of those ‘I looove being pregnant’ pregnant people.

Nyle Zafar.

“Why aren’t you having your baby abroad?”

Which item in your closet did were you saddest about not fitting?
I have missed wearing my favorite pair of white jeans throughout my pregnancy. All my lowers stopped fitting me in my fifth month and it was a task and a half to search for new ones and I refused to wear those ugly maternity elasticated ones. I also had to buy a pair of FitFlips for comfort and I can’t wait to throw them away!

What is something funny your significant other has said during this time?
“I hope our child is a fan of Apple, not Android.”

What clothes do you feel most comfortable in?
During my pregnancy, I wore a lot of cotton maxi dresses, long kaftans, kimono wrap-around tops, draped tunics, yoga pants, tights, short boxy kurtas and palazzo pants. Since two and a half out of three trimesters of my pregnancy were in summers, it was really all about comfort for me.

How did you do up the nursery?
A very close architect friend Shehzad Dossa helped me out and we stuck to lots of black and white. The toys and accessories add the colour.

I look at kids and finally think “awwwww.” Does that count?

How did you decide your daughters name? Whatdoes it mean?
I shortlisted Selina and Alayna, but my husband liked Alayna more so we went with name. Its’ a word from Quran which means ‘upon us.’

What is the best piece of advice you got on motherhood?
Enjoy the first few weeks of motherhood. Children grow up so quickly. Take time to enjoy the quiet moments when they sleep on your chest, stretch or smile. New babies are truly little miracles. My mother said this to me.

Who does the baby most look like?
Babies change faces everyday but at the moment she’s a mix of my other kids.

Who gives the baby the most attention?
Her dad, for sure. He is totally in love with her.

How has motherhood changed you?
Becoming a mom makes you a student. Children teach you so many things. You cannot be selfish and be a good mother. Motherhood showed me how selfless I could be. It doesn’t mean I have forgotten myself. It means that the needs of your children cause you to re-prioritize things that you may have thought were very important at one time before motherhood. I love like I never knew I could.

How do you get “me” time?
My husband and I travel frequently and I love spending time with him.

What foods did you crave during your pregnancy? What smells/foods were you off of?
I was addicted to ice and was totally off meat.

Tips for losing the baby weight?
My biggest tip would be to eat right and excercise as soon as the first forty days are over. Good genes help a lot, though!

How have you done up the nursery?
Her nursery is pink and lilac. Her crib is like a carriage, and she sleeps so peacefully in it.

How have your other two children reacted to having a baby sister?
I have a daughter named Rania and a son named Zaydan. They love their baby sister and are always hugging and kissing her. I was nervous my son might be jealous, but he took it very well.

How did you decide the baby’s name? What does it mean?
We took suggestions from all our friends and offered them a free outfit from Misha Lakhani for the person whose suggestion we chose. Lucky for me, it was my choice that won. Sofia is a Greek word meaning ‘wise.’

What was one great piece of advice you got about being a new mom and from who?
“It’s going to be tough but it will be amazing.” My friends Sania and Nada said this to me and it is very true.

Who gives baby the most attention?
Grandparents – my dad is smitten!

What was something you were originally nervous about but now feels really natural?
Changing diapers. I sneakily managed to avoid doing it for the first month and left it to my mom and husband to do, but eventually I started and it’s really not a big deal.

How has motherhood changed you?
I feel I’m more emotional now, definitely more sensitive and also more open about my emotions.

What foods did you crave during pregnancy?
Chocolate.

Are there any other pregnancy syndromes you had?
I had serious pregger brain – my mind stopped working altogether.

What was the best part about being pregnant?
Maternity vacations.

When was the first time you saw your baby daughter?
As soon as she was whipped out!

How did you decide her name? What does it mean?
My other daughters name is Zayna and I wanted them both to have names started from Z. My husband always liked the name Zahra and so did I, so that’s what we went with, Zahra means “flower”

What was one great piece of advice you got about being a mother and from who?
My mother once told me “everything passes”

Who does the baby most look like?
My husband. And my son, Muhammad

Are you getting any sleep?
No. If you’re getting sleep after a newborn, you are doing something wrong. I have a son and a daughter already, so for me the jump from one kid to two kids was like going from two to thirty!

How has motherhood changed you?
It made me realize sleep is overrated. You can do a lot in your life without eight hours of sleep…Apparently two will do! Elizabeth Stone said, “Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body” – and that is true of motherhood.

How do you get “me” time?
I don’t get much, to be honest but I do go for walks with my husband frequently and go out at night with friends.

What goods did you crave during your pregnancy?
Shake Shack burgers

What foods/smells were you totally off of?
I did not have a bite of chicken all nine months

Any tips for losing the baby weight?
When you find out, let me know

How do you do up the nursery?
This time, I went for a more practical feel. The colours are primarily pink and dove grey.

What was the best part about being pregnant?
I ate anything I wanted and my hair became pretty luscious.

How did you decide the baby’s name?
We chose Faiz as Rizwan and I always loved the name. It means both “victorious” and “grace”

What was the best piece of advice you got?
To feed the baby on demand in the initial months allowing him to feel secure as far as his food goes, instead of making him cry for it

What was something you were originially nervous about but now feels really natural?
I was very, very nervous about caring for Faiz in general (holding him right, feeding him properly, changing his nappy correctly etc.) as I was always so paranoid about my nieces and nephews but somehow I just felt secure about my ability to care for him once I had him.

Who is on diaper duty?
I am on diaper duty, although Rizwan was quite fantastic at it the first month!

How has motherhood changed you?
Motherhood has definitely made me feel a sense of contentment. It’s also given me such a massive sense of excitement in life, watching my baby grow and change every day.

What foods did you crave during pregnancy?
I craved cardamom in the last 2 months of my pregnancy. I ate entire packets in a day!

What foods/smells are you totally off of?
I could not bear the smell of Rizwans deodorant or cologne or any of our room sprays or scents.

Any tips for losing the baby weight?
I am still trying to lose my baby and pre-baby weight so I’m in no position to share tips!

How have you done up the nursery?
It’s quite nautical in theme. A real boys nursery, as I imagined it would be.

Have your maternal instincts kicked in yet?
Maternal instincts are in full force, as is maternal possessive freak syndrome!

What is the best part about being pregnant?
No matter how sick I felt or how much I tortured my poor husband, we were just so excited to be a having a baby
