We chat with the brains and brawns behind UC Fit about all that drives him
HOW DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS AND TRAINING? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START UC FIT?
I have always been a physically active person. As a child I used to spend most of my time in the playground on the monkey bars, and growing up I was always into working out and staying fit. It was not till I moved to Australia for my Triple Masters that I decided to get my formal education as a fitness trainer from the Functional Training Institute. I got double certifications as a Master Kettlebell and Functional Fitness Trainer, and 14 Continuing Education Credits which are needed to be a certified trainer in Australia. After that, I moved home, and starting my own UC Fit classes seemed like the right natural progression.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
Everyday, I sleep with contentment and wake up with immense energy and excitement to make a positive difference in people’s lives through fitness. When you live for your passion, you get strong innate motivation everyday as you are aligned with your life’s purpose.
THREE MUST FOLLOW RULES OF FITNESS:
Never skip your Monday session, as it kick starts your metabolism and lays down the foundation for the rest of the week. Never skip three days of workout in a row and never skip your meals during the day. We have all heard it before, but breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and eating periodically throughout is key, as skipping meals slows down your metabolism leading to fat storage.
ONE WORKOUT MYTH THAT NEEDS TO BE BROKEN:
Since coming back to Pakistan, it appalls me how much uneducated advice runs around society in the form of word of mouth. One in particular is that “If women train with weights they will bulk up!” Women cannot bulk up by using weights, as they lack a critical element needed, which is (drum roll…) Testosterone! Instead, women who train with weights get beautiful lean physiques and look fitter than those who only do cardio on machines elliptical or spinners. Simply put, weights will not turn you into a professional bodybuilder!
IN YOUR OPINION, THE BEST WORKOUT IS ONE THAT…
Challenges your mind and body equally! It should get your heart racing , your throat parched, your legs trembling and your muscles burning. If you are able to go to a gym and take selfies while working out, I have news for you… You didn’t do it right!
WHAT IS THE MOST BRUTAL WORKOUT YOU DO?
That would be one of my sessions called “The Cocktail”. The average calorie burn in most of my 45 minute sessions is around 750 plus, and in a 60 minute class, it has gone up to almost 1,000 calories!
TELL US ABOUT A TYPICAL DAY IN ONE OF YOUR CLASSES:
I run six sessions a day from 8 am to 8 pm, five days a week. Every day I have a different workout and I never repeat my workouts in a year. Every session of mine has scientifically divided segments ranging from body weight cardio to Kettlebell cardio and strength to get the maximum calorie burn per session. My sessions don’t just play with your heart rate, but actually condition your metabolism, which is a concept that is alien to the workout programs in Pakistan.
HOW IMPORTANT IS KNOWLEDGE OF NUTRITION AND DIET WHEN TRYING TO GET FIT?
In my classes, you get superior calorie burn, leading to superior fat loss and the loss of inches. At the same time, while I don’t have a specific diet program, I always tell all my students to be educated about what they eat, as that helps with weight loss and prevents fat from accumulating again. It’s simple – what you eat impacts your workout results directly.
BE HONEST. ARE YOU ALWAYS A HEALTHY EATER?
Yes, I always eat healthy! I never cheat on my fitness, thus I don’t believe in any cheat meals. My personal belief is very simple – if something is not good for you in the long run, why even have it once? Moreover, I believe in the saying “sugar craves sugar”, so one cheat meal can slowly turn into a counter-productive habit over time.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU HAVE GOTTEN?
“Believe in yourself. If you keep your head down and work hard, success will come itself.”
ADVICE FOR A YOUNGER YOU:
Take your sweet time and don’t wear your heart on your sleeve! Haha.
IF YOU COULD SPEND THE DAY WORKING OUT WITH ANY ONE CELEBRITY, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
It would definitely be Hareem Farooq. I met her at the Ladiesfund Gala and she seems like a fun person to train with. She volunteered to try it out some kettlebell exercises infront of an audience, so that’s something I really appreciated and enjoyed.
FAVOURITE CLIENT TRANSFORMATION STORY:
I focus on empowering women to achieve results they thought were impossible before. My clients ages range from age 14 – 63, so I get to hear their stories all the time. Doing things they couldn’t do before, overcoming obstacles in life (both mental emotional and physical), fitting into their old jeans or finally being able to get down to their dream dress size are all stories that I hear everyday that I am proud to be a part of.
