Madamewit writes about everything you need to know about one essential beauty item - the beautyblender!
Beauty blender shook up the makeup world with its launch in 2008, quickly becoming a staple with makeup artists and novices. Created by Rea Ann Silva, Beautyblender has won several awards including the prestigious Allure Best of Beauty award six times.
It is a neon pink teardrop shaped cosmetic sponge that remains unbeatable for giving flawless makeup application be it stippling, baking, blending, or sculpting. There are now several types of Beautyblender in the market for precision application such as Beautyblender Pro which is ideal for self tanning/bronzing, considering it is slightly larger than Original Beautyblender. Beautyblender Nude has been created for a precision streakless application of foundation; Beautyblender Pure is for serums, moisturizers, and eye cream, while Beautyblender Micromini is ideal for spot coverage and highlighter.
Although there are several self proclaimed dupes on the market, none of these sponges have come close to producing the same result as a beauty blender. The secret of this high definition sponge lies in its trademark material and how it is shaped. Not only does the material ensure makeup sits on the surface of sponge for smoother, more uniform blending but also only holds the necessary amount required of the product for premium application. You can also use this cosmetic sponge with an array of products: gel, cream, liquid, mousse, powder, and face oils while producing the same perfect result.
The egg shape makes it easier to reach small areas of the face such as corner of the eyes and around the nose while simultaneously blending any harsh lines of concealer, corrector, or foundation. Although, the price of a Beautyblender can be considered hefty, the multipurpose of this cosmetic sponge combined with it being reusable makes it a steal!
Since you aren’t throwing it away, it is imperative that you clean and store it correctly. Beautyblender solid or liquid blender cleanser is easily available for cleaning it but they can be expensive. The internet is filled with several ways of cleaning Beautyblender, but we found the most effective way of cleaning it is using two parts dish washing liquid soap and one part virgin olive oil. Make a concoction of the two ingredients, coat your damp beauty blender and squeeze in the homemade cleanser. Under warm tap water, wash and squeeze the Beautyblender until the water runs clear and viola! Your beautyblender will look and feel as good as new.
Lastly, for the sake of your skin, it is imperative to replace your Beautyblender every three months! We used our cosmetic sponge occasionally for almost a year and by the end of this time it felt as if a lot of product was trapped inside and no matter what technique we used (be it solid or liquid blender cleanser, regular soap and water, baby shampoo and water etc) it never felt super squeaky clean. Surprisingly the technique using olive oil and dish washing liquid soap mentioned above really worked!
However, since it has been a year, we decided to cut our Beautyblender in half and see what had happened inside. As the image above will show you, the inside of the sponge is as good as new. However, air pockets had formed at the edges (top and bottom) which had caused some of the products (foundation, primer, concealer, corrector, and powder) used over time to get trapped inside the Beautyblender.
Overall, Beautyblender does what it promises: instead of getting absorbed, the product coats the sponge for a uniform application; it serves several functions such as blending, stippling, concealing etc all the while giving streak less seamless flawless finish. No wonder this beauty tool is a staple with every makeup loving individual!
