Meet the uber stylish and fun Mahak Bokhari. From studying makeup in Dubai and now working at the superb Neelos salon in Karachi, this upcoming makeup maestro is one to watch out for!

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A MAKEUP ARTIST?

I have been playing dress up and doing everyone’s makeup around me since I was 3. Sometimes I would give my friends a total bridal makeover, or sometimes my younger siblings and cousins (the boys and girls) would get bullied and threatened to corporate! I knew then as strongly as I know now that this was my passion and something I would definitely pursue a career in.

WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER TO HAVE ACHIEVED IN YOUR CAREER TO DATE?

Firstly, the trust of all my friends and family to be their go-to makeup artist is the best! Secondly, a lot of knowledge for the art, I think. When you love something, you want to perfect yourself within it, so automatically you learn more about it. Being able to distinguish between things like different eyeshades, picking the right skin tone and choosing the perfect brushes are actually more complicated than you’d think! Besides freelancing, I also have a qualification from the Illumin8 Makeup studio in Dubai and I am currently working at Neelo’s Spa and Salon Come by ladies!

WHO ARE YOUR THREE BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS?

Huda Kattan, Carli Byble and Camila Coehlo.

FAVOURITE PAKISTANI MAKEUP ARTIST:

Shamain has to be my favorite. I absolutely love the way she manages to make any look come alive in such a subtle and gorgeous way. I especially like how she highlights and makes a womans features stand out without being too loud.

WHO WOULD YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION BE WITH?

HUDA BEAUTY

My dream collaboration would be Huda (Kattan) Beauty. I think anyone who knows me would know how obsessed I am with her. Her lashes are everything, and on top of that her personality seems super friendly and fun!

WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR YOURSELF IN 5 AND 10 YEARS?

IMAGE 2

I would love to start by opening up my own little makeup studio… Just the way I always wanted it to be! So in five years, that would be great to achieve. In ten years, the dream would be to launch my own makeup brand.

DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE:

Subtle, with highlighted features and a pop of colour – and this goes for both makeup and clothes!

A CHANGE YOU’D LIKE IN PAKISTANI BEAUTY TRENDS:

No more red ‘lipstick-ed’ brides!

BIGGEST BEAUTY FAUX PAS ONE CAN MAKE:

bb cream

Putting a base that does not match your skin tone, and heavy makeup during daytime, especially an overdose of blush! It’s always best to use a soft BB cream, such as the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer- oil free. Make sure it matches your skin tone.

ONE TREND YOU WANT TO SEE MORE OF:

NARS

A natural look is always stunning, but it’s all about finding the right shade. Go for a tad bit of concealer/foundation where  needed, with a few strokes  of the right bronzer (The  Anastasia Contour Kit in  medium shade is perfect for  this), your eyebrows lightly  shaded and some mascara  on the bottom lashes. And  of course, a pale pastel  lip colour to go with!  PRO TIP: For a truly soft  and subtle look, always  opt for a shade slightly  darker than your skin  tone. My go to concealer for this look is Custard by NARs!

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU FEEL ONE NEEDS TO WORK ON TO BE TRULY SUCCESSFUL IN THIS INDUSTRY?

Practice makes perfect! I want to do a couple more courses, work with different people- maybe cover a fashion week event with a designer (Elan would be a dream!) I also think it is important to keep in mind that any makeup artist works very closely with their client; You’re not just physically very close to their face but you might also be preparing them for the biggest night of their  life. So you have to have a friendly and warm attitude that makes people  comfortable around you.

FAVOURITE THING TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING?

Pampering myself at the salon (I never have time to do that anymore!) and catching up on my shows.

FAVOURITE BRAND:

N3N2N1

Urban Decay all the way! Their new Gwen Stefani eyeshadow palette has amazing shimmery colours for Summer, and their classic NAKED palettes are a must have for every girl!

MAKEUP TIPS FOR THE SUMMER:

  1. Primer. It’s the best thing you could use to hold your make-up on all day long.
  2. Nude lips are very in. Deep lipstick shades do not go well in the hot summer, so try nude colours for a refreshing look.
  3. Water proof mascara is my personal go to makeup item. Between all the sweat and humidity, it allows you to maintain the best lashes without them flaking off.

TOP 3 SUMMER PRODUCTS:

LOREAL

  1. Smash box Primer.
  2. Carli Bybel Pallete.
  3. Loreal Telescopic Mascara.
